Africa’s second-largest economy secures $88 million from U.S. energy giant Chevron for massive offshore oil and gas exploration
The contract was signed with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and witnessed by Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi.
Under the terms of the agreement, Chevron will reprocess 3D seismic data and drill two initial exploration wells in the offshore Lotus concession.
Egypt advances major energy deal with the U.S.
Located roughly 200 kilometers off the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, the Lotus area lies in deep waters ranging between 2,000 and 2,800 meters.
Because the block has never undergone deep exploration drilling, officials consider the site a prime frontier for potential fossil fuel discoveries.
According to Egypt Today, Minister Karim Badawi stated that expanding the national exploration map remains “a central part of the ministry’s strategy to boost domestic oil and gas production“.
How the U.S. company Chevron will explore offshore waters in Egypt
The Lotus concession expands Chevron’s presence in Egyptian waters, where the company holds stakes in six offshore Mediterranean exploration blocks, including Nargis, North Dabaa, Lotus, Northwest Atoll, North Sidi Barrani, and North Cleopatra.
As reported by Egypt Today, Badawi welcomed Chevron’s investment, noting that “the Lotus agreement could support new discoveries and help increase domestic oil and gas production“.
Chevron’s Mediterranean operations have already yielded positive findings, including the Nargis natural gas discovery and promising signs of crude oil at the Veleox well in North Cleopatra.
Moving forward, Egypt intends to open additional exploration blocks across the Mediterranean, Western Desert, Nile Delta, Gulf of Suez, Sinai, and southern regions.
